What are clip nuts called?
A clip-on nut, also known as a sheet metal nut or a speed nut (but this is ambiguous, see speed nut), is a type of nut designed to be clipped to sheet metal. It is a type of captive nut commonly made as a cage nut.
How does a speed nut clip work?
A Speed Nut is a reusable, one-piece, self-locking fastener made of thin, heat-treated spring steel. Two prongs arch upward from the screw hole, and the fastener base is usually bowed. When the screw is tightened, the arch in the base diminishes, forcing the prongs inward and upward at the root of the threads.
How do you use a U clip nut?
After aligning two or more sheet metal panels together, you can clip a U-nut onto the edge of one of the panels. The hole in the center is intended for a threaded fastener. With the U-nut in place, you can then drive a screw through the central hole and into the sheet metal panels.
